FACES: “Fun Activities to Connect Engage and Socially Succeed!" "Why do some children have difficulty navigating the social arena?" "Why does he think I'm joking, when I'm really angry?" "Can't she see that the other kids are bored with the game?"
What began as a social skills group, has become FACES; An extensively researched and fully kid-tested tool to help children recognize and gain an understanding of different facial expressions and the emotions they non-verbally communicate. It was developed by 3 creative and experienced professionals (An Occupational Therapist, Licensed Clinical Social Worker and Computer whiz who specializes in creating curriculum-based games).
There are 4 components: (Please click items below for details) Components may be purchased as a set or individually and include the Instructions Manual and 3 fun, child centered interactive computer games titled “What’s My Mood?” “Memory Mood Mash-up” and “Make My Mood”.
The Instructors manual is an invaluable tool containing the 12 lesson/session plans needed to teach students better social skills through an improved understanding and utilization of non-verbal communication. Each lesson/session includes supporting research and documentation, measureable goals and objectives, reproducible progress charts, a list of needed materials and easy to follow step by step procedures. Additionally, adaptations to address specific student strengths and limitations are provided along with a reproducible follow up message containing supplemental activities to help with the generalization of these developing social skills to other environments, including home, school and community.
The Computer Games are designed to weave critical social skills into a familiar format and are used to reinforce lessons and skills. Children believe they are just having fun but pre and post testing consistently shows they are also learning valuable social skills. FACES has successfully been used in kindergarten through eighth grade classes. Parents, teachers, and therapists find the program easy, exciting and successful to implement . User insights, tools, reproducible progress charts and follow-up notes/letters make communicating and reinforcing new skills almost effortless. (Please click item below for more details).
A totally customized version of FACES is also available. The customized version uses photographs/pictures of children from the students own life. Most often faces of classmates, siblings, teammates, etc. making the different facial expressions. This immediate degree of familiarity allows for quicker recognition, and facilitates self modeling. According to research, self modeling is highly motivating, leads to a heightened self-awareness, and increased social success. The response from children, parents, and teachers is incredible! The children’s faces light up upon seeing their images in the computer game. Their joy and enthusiasm spark even the most reluctant learners to join in the making and playing of the games. Customized versions of these games can also be done with photographs of adults, family members and others in the child’s daily life.
Technical Note: All games were developed and programmed using Adobe Flash. They have been tested to be compatible with Mac OS 10.4 and Windows XP and above. Please check your computer capability before ordering.
**This item can not be returned. As is customary with computer software, a defective CD may be replaced for the same program.
